Salesforce aims to deploy one billion AI agents by the end of 2025, marking a massive shift in how AI integrates into enterprises. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, argues that the era of simple chatbots is ending. Instead, we’re moving toward autonomous, persistent AI agents that operate like digital colleagues, managing complex tasks independently and maintaining context over time.
Altman divides AI's evolution into three waves. The first wave involved predictive AI, such as recommendation systems and spam filters. Then came generative AI the ChatGPT era focused on producing text, images, or code in response to prompts. The current third wave introduces agentic AI, which breaks away from mere reaction. These agents initiate actions, execute multi-step workflows, and operate continuously without direct human input.
This transition reshapes what AI can do on its own. Unlike past tools that reset after each interaction, these persistent agents remember context across sessions and advance work even when no one is watching. For crypto markets, this means AI agents could autonomously manage wallets, trades, and DeFi protocols, but that will require strong blockchain-based identity and audit systems.
Earlier in 2026, OpenAI and Paradigm launched EVMbench, a benchmark for AI’s ability to secure smart contracts, highlighting the growing intersection of AI and crypto security. This development complements broader AI-driven innovations, like rising demand for multi-chip packaging amid AI growth, which also impact crypto infrastructure.
Altman’s vision signals a major architectural shift rather than a simple feature update. With enterprises gearing up to deploy agentic AI at scale, the chatbot epoch appears to be closing its chapter.
