Fraudsters are flooding EU inboxes with fake compliance notices. Since MiCA's July 1 deadline forced unlicensed crypto firms offline, scammers impersonating regulators and legitimate exchanges have ramped up attacks on users scrambling to move their assets. The European Union has flagged a spike in these schemes, with crooks mimicking ESMA, France's AMF, and licensed platforms to intercept customer transfers during the transition.

The timing is deliberate. When 1,700 firms stopped serving EU clients and 338 licensed providers took their place, millions of users had to migrate accounts or withdraw crypto. That window of chaos is exactly where impersonators thrive. Investors expect emails from exchanges, ID verification requests, transfer instructions. Scammers know this.

How the con works

A user gets an official-looking message claiming to be from a regulator or their new exchange. The email directs them to a fake website that mirrors the real one. Once credentials are entered or a transfer is authorized, the crypto is gone. Cybersecurity researchers have warned for years that large migrations create perfect cover for these attacks, because people are already on edge about moving money.

The chaos isn't random. MiCA itself created the conditions. By forcing a hard cutoff for non-compliant operators, the regulation triggered synchronized account migrations across the entire EU market. European criminals have already shown appetite for crypto theft, from digital scams to physical violence. Impersonation attacks are just the lower-friction version.

Bitcoin held steady around $64,700 and Ether near $1,910 on August 6, suggesting market stability despite the fraud wave. The real problem isn't price volatility. It's that 338 approved CASPs are now processing flows from former customers of hundreds of defunct platforms, and attackers are betting that some users will never verify the sender before hitting send.
