Meta just launched Muse Code in beta, a terminal-based coding agent that runs on its own Muse Spark 1.2 model. The tool handles complete software engineering tasks, from planning to writing and validating code, all without forcing developers to hop between different applications. It's the company's first dedicated coding assistant, and it arrives while Meta faces investor pressure to prove its massive AI spending actually produces revenue.

The agent coordinates persistent subagents that stay active across entire sessions. In one test, the system optimized Nvidia Hopper GPU kernels through more than 1,000 tool calls across sessions lasting up to 24 hours. Developers get access through pay-as-you-go pricing that matches Muse Spark 1.1 rates, with a cheaper contributor tier available for those willing to share their data.

Timing and strategy

Alexandr Wang, who leads Meta Superintelligence Labs, oversees this release. Wang joined Meta in mid-2025 as the centerpiece of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's effort to rebuild the company's AI strategy. "You can install it with one command and then use it to take on complete software engineering tasks across a wide variety of use cases, planning changes, writing code, validating the results," Wang said in an interview reported by CNBC. The move comes directly after Meta's shares dropped following a soft revenue forecast and shrinking free cash flow in its latest quarterly results. Zuckerberg is clearly hunting for ways to monetize the company's AI infrastructure spending, and a cheaper alternative to Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex could be exactly what developers want.
