Yang Zhilin’s Beijing-based startup, Moonshot AI, defies the intense competition for AI talent in China by retaining one of the country’s most skilled research teams. Founded just three years ago, Moonshot has managed to hold onto its core experts despite offers from wealthier rivals regularly pulling top talent away.
Yang’s credentials add weight to the story. With a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and as a co-author of groundbreaking language models Transformer-XL and XLNet, his background helped Moonshot emerge quickly as a serious player. Alongside co-founders Zhou Xinyu and Wu Yuxin, Yang has steered the company to focus on consumer AI products, with their flagship being the Kimi personal assistant.
Moonshot’s next big step: Kimi K3 model launch
The company’s next milestone is the release of its Kimi K3 large language model, slated for July 2026. Positioned to be among the largest open-weight models globally, Kimi K3 will challenge the dominance of major U.S. AI systems. Open-weight models allow developers worldwide to access the core parameters, accelerating innovation beyond what proprietary systems offer.
This move comes amid a challenging geopolitical environment. U.S. export controls restrict access to Nvidia’s latest GPUs for Chinese firms, forcing Moonshot to either rely on older hardware or alternative approaches. The startup is also under scrutiny for allegedly acquiring Nvidia chips through unauthorized channels and reverse-engineering Anthropic’s models, though no detailed public response has been issued.
Despite operating with a staff of around 80 and without the billions in funding available to American AI labs, Moonshot is quietly building a formidable research bench. Its success in holding talent and pushing technological boundaries hint at a larger ambition.
Looking ahead, Moonshot reportedly eyeing a Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing valued at approximately $30 billion in 2026. If successful, this would mark a significant milestone for the company’s expansion and validate its strategy of combining deep technical expertise with consumer-focused AI.
