US Pressure Mounts Over China’s Moonshot AI After Launching Kimi K3 Model

Chinese startup Moonshot AI released its Kimi K3 model last Friday, sparking intense global interest and rapid government scrutiny from the US. The company claims Kimi K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters and rivals leading American AI systems like OpenAI's GPT and Anthropic's Claude in performance.

The Kimi K3 model stands out because it is openly accessible: users can download, modify, and run it on their own hardware at no cost. This contrasted sharply with most leading US models, typically restricted behind paid subscriptions. The demand was overwhelming, forcing Moonshot to halt new subscriptions within just 48 hours after launch due to server overload.

Benchmark tests put Kimi K3 in close competition with US counterparts, sometimes even surpassing them. Analyst firm Counterpoint Research estimates China’s AI gap with the US has shrunk to about three to six months, signaling significant advances by Chinese developers.

However, Washington's response was swift and stern. Michael Kratsios, White House technology chief, publicly accused Moonshot of illegally leveraging Anthropic's Fable model through a process called 'industrial distillation.' Anthropic’s Sarah Heck supported this charge, describing it as intellectual property theft and industrial espionage with potential national security implications.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that sanctions and trade blacklisting could follow if the accusations prove valid. In contrast, Moonshot and the Chinese embassy in Washington firmly denied the allegations, labeling them "entirely unfounded." Independent experts like Counterpoint’s Wei Sun questioned the timeline of the claims, doubting Moonshot had enough time to use Anthropic’s current models for training.

Moonshot AI was founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a Carnegie Mellon graduate who notably declined a role related to Apple CEO Tim Cook to build his own company. The startup quickly attracted nearly $300 million in funding rounds. Their Kimi K3 launch echoes earlier moves by DeepSeek in 2025, which also challenged industry norms.
