Beijing-based Moonshot AI has unveiled Kimi K3, claiming the title of the largest open-source AI model ever built, with 2.8 trillion parameters.
The model runs on the Kimi Delta Attention framework and ships with native visual understanding built in, not bolted on as an afterthought.
Open weights are not fully public yet. Access is currently available through Moonshot's apps and API, with the complete weight release scheduled for later in July 2026.
On coding and agentic benchmarks, Kimi K3 lands in the competitive frontier pack, though it trails OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 on some performance metrics.
Prediction markets are not impressed yet. The contract for which company will hold the best AI model by end of August 2026 prices Anthropic at 92% YES probability.
Moonshot AI sits at 1% YES on that same market, reflecting how far the gap remains in the eyes of traders even after the Kimi K3 announcement.
The full open-weight release in July is the next concrete event to watch. Wider access to the weights will determine how quickly the developer community can benchmark and adopt the model at scale.
Any counter-moves from Anthropic or OpenAI before August could shift those probabilities further before the market resolves.
