'Supply risk just repriced overnight,' one energy desk analyst noted after reports confirmed Houthi militants had targeted two Saudi crude tankers in the Red Sea on July 22. The strikes near the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint sent Brent crude to approximately $94.76 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate climbed to around $88.01, both touching their highest levels in nearly six weeks.

The Bab el-Mandeb strait is the narrow passage connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, and roughly 6 million barrels of crude pass through it daily en route to the Suez Canal and onward to European and Asian buyers. Even a partial disruption forces tankers onto the longer Cape of Good Hope route, adding weeks and tens of millions of dollars in freight costs per voyage. Several Saudi-linked tankers have already reportedly reversed course rather than transit the zone, a concrete sign that perceived risk has shifted even before any formal threat-level upgrade is issued.

Prediction markets are beginning to reflect the tension. The December 31 contract tracking the probability of crude oil reaching a new all-time high moved to a 16% YES reading, a modest but measurable shift from prior sessions. That reading matters because it aggregates trader expectations across a six-month horizon, factoring in not just the current incident but the likelihood of further escalation or diplomatic resolution. OPEC and the International Energy Agency have not yet issued formal responses, and their next moves on supply guidance will likely set the floor or ceiling for prices in the near term. The US-Iran diplomatic channel is also in play: odds of a US-Iran deal have already dropped to 28% following separate tensions, which removes one potential pressure valve for Middle Eastern supply anxiety.

Any follow-on attacks, changes in coalition maritime patrols, or signals from Riyadh about rerouting its export fleet will be the data points traders watch most closely in the sessions ahead.
