Amazon’s AI strategy took a surprising turn as the company announced it is stepping back from most of its flagship Nova models. Instead of juggling multiple AI products, Amazon is betting everything on a single, cutting-edge foundation model, signaling a big change in direction within its AI operations.

Cutting Back on Nova: What’s Being Phased Out

Amazon is putting key Nova models like Premier, Omni, Reel, and Canvas into a maintenance-only state, supporting existing users but halting any new development. Internally labeled as "keep the lights on" (KTLO), these products won’t be deleted but will no longer receive engineering resources or upgrades. This freeze affects AI services ranging from video generation to image creation, showing Amazon’s clear shift away from a broad portfolio.

Doubling Down on Frontier Model Research

The company isn’t abandoning AI altogether. Instead, resources are being funneled into Frontier Model Research (FMR), an ambitious new initiative led by AI expert Pieter Abbeel. The goal is to develop one highly competitive foundation model, a move that could redefine Amazon’s AI presence. This project is expected to debut a new flagship model, potentially carrying the Nova name, at the upcoming re:Invent conference in autumn.

This focus comes after Amazon’s earlier AI reorganization, including the closure of its AGI Lab and leadership consolidation under Peter DeSantis from last December. While many Nova models are being sidelined, Amazon continues to maintain select models like Nova 2 Lite, Nova 2 Sonic, Nova Forge for customization, and Nova Act for AI agents.

Backing from AWS and Compute Power

Amazon’s cloud giant, AWS, strengthens this bet with massive compute commitments exceeding $138 billion to OpenAI and over $100 billion to Anthropic. These deals highlight where Amazon sees its real influence in the AI landscape powerful infrastructure supporting frontier innovation rather than a multitude of scattered AI models.

This pivot underlines a strategic choice: fewer projects with deeper investment versus a diluted spread across many tools. Amazon’s AI narrative now hinges on breakthrough foundation models, leaving behind its previous broad Nova portfolio.
