World Foundation, the nonprofit behind Sam Altman's World Network, raised $52.5 million in a locked token sale led by Pantera Capital. The funds will accelerate integration of World ID biometric identity technology into enterprise applications and AI platforms. Over 39 million people have already joined the network, with more than 18 million verified through the unique Orb device.
Details of the Fundraising and Technology
The recent token sale involved strategic investors like Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto, all agreeing to a 12-month lockup on their WLD tokens. This round follows an earlier $135 million raise in May 2025, led by a16z and Bain Capital Crypto.
World ID confirms a user’s humanity by scanning biometrics on an Orb. This device issues a digital credential that proves identity without storing personal data, addressing privacy concerns amid rising scrutiny. Since launch, the network has processed over 475 million proofs, highlighting rapid adoption.
The WLD token trades around $0.37, holding a market cap slightly above $1.3 billion. This growth fits within a larger wave of investment in crypto and AI infrastructure, with Paradigm’s recent $1.2 billion fund and Framework Ventures' $400 million raise fueling similar projects. Coinbase’s move to accept USDC payments from autonomous AI agents signals growing commercial interest in AI-driven identity verification.
Industry Reactions and Future Focus
Cosmo Jiang, General Partner at Pantera Capital, emphasized the urgent demand for proof of human identity amid accelerating AI development. The World Network plans to shift from expanding user numbers to embedding its technology within enterprise software and AI agent platforms, aiming to curb AI deepfakes and automated bot activity.
World Foundation’s approach contrasts with other recent market moves, such as the price fluctuations in Worldcoin following fundraising events. The integration of biometric identity verification could become a critical tool for digital platforms facing rising challenges from synthetic identities and AI impersonation.
