Paul Frambot, co-founder of Morpho, described the launch of Midnight on the Base network as a major stride allowing users to set their own lending rates and terms, calling it the protocol's most ambitious initiative so far. He highlighted the effort to bring the global credit market, valued at $200 trillion, onchain through this fixed-rate, fixed-term credit protocol.
Morpho introduced Midnight as a new protocol designed to offer fixed interest rates and terms for borrowing and lending, a departure from the variable rates typical in DeFi platforms. The protocol goes live alongside a Markets App enabling users to interact directly with these fixed-rate markets, initially supporting Base with plans to expand to additional networks in the future.
Unlike most DeFi lending systems that adjust rates based on market supply and demand, Midnight locks in rates for specified terms, emulating fixed-income credit products found in traditional finance. Frambot emphasized the Markets App as one of the most advanced in DeFi, facilitating direct lending and borrowing within Midnight Markets and paving the way for fintech companies, institutions, and credit desks to participate.
Previously, Morpho had implemented fixed-rate lending at the protocol level, but Midnight extends this framework into live markets with dedicated user tools. This development indicates Morpho's ongoing commitment to innovation in decentralized finance. Related trends in the crypto sector include Base's advancements in scalable tokenized equities, as seen in recent efforts to expand capabilities on the Base chain.
