Microsoft will invest billions to support Mistral’s expansion of AI-focused data centers in Europe, enhancing AI compute capacity with thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. The move integrates Mistral’s Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models into Microsoft’s Foundry and Copilot Studio platforms, aiming to aid regulated industries by providing AI infrastructure hosted on European soil.

Details of the Expansion and Integration

The agreement, announced Tuesday, does not include Microsoft acquiring additional equity in the French AI startup Mistral. Instead, the multibillion-dollar sum reflects Microsoft’s planned expenditure on AI compute power and infrastructure capacity. Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, emphasized this distinction in an interview with Reuters.

The core of the deal revolves around hardware expansion: Mistral will grow its European data center capabilities using thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. Microsoft will use this capacity for its cloud services and AI customers, particularly through its Azure Local product, which enables enterprises to operate workloads within their own data centers without internet connectivity.

Mistral’s AI models, Medium 3.5 and OCR 4, are now available on Foundry, Microsoft’s application development platform, with Medium 3.5 also accessible via Copilot Studio. This setup is particularly designed to meet the needs of banks, hospitals, and manufacturers facing strict data residency regulations.

Industry Impact and Strategic Partnership

Brad Smith and Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch pointed out that this deal offers regulated organizations enhanced control over AI deployment. Combining American and European technologies under this framework ensures continuous, secure access to AI services within regulatory requirements.

The existing collaboration between Microsoft and Mistral deepens with this deal, focusing on delivering AI capabilities that comply with data governance constraints in Europe. The expansion supports enterprises needing AI compute resources that can operate in isolated environments.
