"This marks a significant advance in China’s AI capabilities," said a market analyst following Alibaba’s announcement of their new AI system. The company unveiled Qwen3.8-Max, boasting 2.4 trillion parameters, positioning it just behind Anthropic’s Fable 5 in global rankings. The reveal took place during Shanghai’s World AI Conference and immediately boosted Alibaba's shares by up to 5.4% on the Hong Kong exchange, placing the firm at the top of the Hang Seng Index for the day.

Qwen3.8-Max is now available as a preview on Alibaba’s Token Plan subscription and integrates with developer tools Qoder and QoderWork. The size of its parameter set illustrates a growing ambition among Chinese developers to reach multi-trillion scale models, intensifying competition with U.S. AI firms. Parameters quantify an AI model’s complexity and directly correlate with performance.

Alibaba’s stock had already surged earlier in the week following Chinese regulatory approval of Apple’s on-device AI in China, which connects iPhone users to Alibaba’s Qwen system. This approval had been pending for a significant period, and its clearance has opened new integration avenues in the world’s largest smartphone market. Meanwhile, Moonshot AI, another Beijing startup, released Kimi K3, the largest open-source AI model worldwide at 2.8 trillion parameters, surpassing competitors like DeepSeek’s 1.6 trillion and Zhipu AI’s 744 billion parameter models. Kimi K3 is designed for extensive coding and complex reasoning tasks but is acknowledged by its creators to remain just below the strongest AI systems globally.

Alibaba’s move shows a key moment as Chinese AI projects achieve greater scale and challenge international leaders. The company’s latest offering reflects its commitment to maintaining momentum amid a dynamic and rapidly evolving AI marketplace.
