At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) unveiled a detailed plan to combine artificial intelligence with nuclear energy technologies. The initiative, named AI for ADANES, outlines how AI will be integrated across all phases of an advanced nuclear system designed to improve fuel management and reduce radioactive waste.

Advancing Nuclear Innovation with AI

ADANES stands for Accelerator-Driven Advanced Nuclear Energy System, a concept under development by CAS since the early 2010s with roots in research dating back to the 1990s. This subcritical nuclear system incorporates AI in five layers of its architecture, blending data analysis, physics models, and expert insight. By harnessing AI, the system aims to optimize fuel breeding, handle spent-fuel transmutation, and enhance power generation efficiency.

The CAS roadmap also introduces CiADS, a major science infrastructure project that will test and validate these integrated technologies. To support this effort, CAS formed the AI for ADANES Alliance, a collaborative network of research institutions, nuclear companies, AI firms, and financial backers committed to pushing this vision forward.

The collaboration builds on a strategic partnership between CAS and China General Nuclear dating back to 2016, reflecting a decade of preparation now culminating in a concrete global presentation. As AI technologies grow more energy-intensive, innovations like ADANES could reshape the energy demands of sectors like AI and crypto mining, signaling a potential shift in how these industries power their operations.
