The XRP Ledger has taken a significant step forward in AI-powered payments by integrating Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent (VI) standard through t54.ai’s x402 Facilitator. This addition enhances payment processing on the XRP Ledger by verifying authorization and assessing transaction risks before completion.

The x402 Facilitator, operational since February 2026, enables AI agents to buy digital goods and services directly with XRP or RLUSD without needing an API key or user account. Now, developers can attach the Mastercard VI credential to these payments, which cryptographically confirms who authorized the payment, the spending limits, and the details of the purchase.

Every payment request is automatically checked by the XRPL Facilitator’s built-in risk engine to ensure proper authorization prior to execution. This system draws from Mastercard’s Agentic Payments framework, specifically designed to support autonomous transactions initiated by AI entities.

Mastercard’s push for AI payment standards also includes their Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M) initiative. This program allows machines to carry out authorized payments on behalf of humans across Mastercard’s global network. Ripple joined this effort in June 2026, reinforcing its commitment to enabling autonomous AI payments.

According to t54.ai, the XRP Ledger has now processed over 1.4 million agentic transactions through the x402 Facilitator, highlighting rapid growth in this payment ecosystem. RippleX’s Head of Engineering, J. Akinyele, compared this progress to the early days of cloud computing, suggesting that future AI agents will need payment systems that operate as smoothly as data exchanges do today.

He emphasized that reaching this milestone is impressive but indicated that the technology will continue evolving to meet the increasing demands of autonomous AI economies.
