When Spain lifted the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy, the stakes weren’t just on the pitch. Over 400,000 crypto wallets were busy placing bets across the globe, leading to a staggering $20 billion in prediction market volume tied to the tournament. This isn’t just a trivia figure it reflects a seismic shift in how sports fans engage with major events.
The United States and China emerged as the top contributors, funneling the highest volumes into these markets. Chainalysis, which tracked activity from January through the final match on July 19, reported that prediction markets made up roughly 63% of all bets during this period. Even before kickoff on June 11, daily betting volume hovered near $50 million, before surging to $250 million as excitement built and peaking beyond $300 million at the final game.
Unconventional bets also grabbed attention. One quirky market, for example, asked if Cristiano Ronaldo would shed tears after his last World Cup run that alone pulled in $49 million. Bettors enjoyed better returns than usual too, with 55% walking away profitable. Most winners, nearly 80%, were seasoned prediction market veterans.
Geographically, alongside the US and China, Canada, Thailand, and the UK contributed substantial betting volumes. Australia, Brazil, Russia, and India also showed strong activity, whereas Africa registered very little on-chain engagement. It highlights how crypto betting still varies widely across regions.
Chainalysis also dug into the origins of funds, uncovering nearly 3,700 wallets linked to illicit activities. Among them, the Huobi/HTX exchange funneled at least $5.4 million into betting wallets, despite sanctions from the UK and EU. Scam-affiliated wallets added nearly $2 million in flows. Interestingly, FIFA’s own on-chain betting experiment on Avalanche appeared largely insulated from such risks, collecting $24 million from NFT sales and strictly verifying user identities.
This enormous betting wave shows how crypto prediction markets are entwining with real-world events on a scale previously unseen. The massive volume and diverse participation offer a glimpse into the evolving landscape at the intersection of sports, blockchain, and finance.
