Vanguard Group, long known for its cautious stance on cryptocurrencies, quietly expanded its holdings in Strategy by adding 529,105 shares, pushing its total to around 10.5 million shares valued at approximately $993.5 million. This move makes Vanguard a significant shareholder in the company that has become a major Bitcoin holder through its balance sheet strategies.
Strategy, previously known as MicroStrategy, has transformed itself into a kind of leveraged Bitcoin proxy by acquiring hundreds of thousands of bitcoins. Despite Vanguard’s earlier refusal to offer spot Bitcoin ETFs on its platform, it now holds close to a billion dollars in Strategy shares, reflecting indirect exposure to Bitcoin’s price swings.
For Vanguard, a predominantly passive investor managing trillions, this $50 million increase is modest. Its investment approach means it follows index compositions. Whenever Strategy features in indexes tracked by Vanguard’s funds, the firm buys the stock accordingly. Historically, Vanguard’s stake in Strategy has fluctuated, at times holding over 20 million shares, which represented more than 8% ownership. The current position indicates ongoing adjustments in line with index weighting changes.
Strategy’s business model, led by Michael Saylor, involves leveraging its balance sheet to buy Bitcoin, issuing debt and equity to fund acquisitions. This approach makes Strategy’s stock highly correlated with Bitcoin, exposing shareholders to amplified gains and losses. Institutional ownership of Strategy increased notably in the first quarter of 2026, even amid significant price volatility.
The fact that major managers like Vanguard hold substantial positions means many index funds indirectly hold Bitcoin through Strategy. Unlike active investors who might exit on conviction, Vanguard’s passive funds will maintain these positions until indexes reflect new weightings.
While Vanguard abstained from the spot Bitcoin ETF race, competitors such as BlackRock and Fidelity actively engaged, drawing billions into their funds.
Strategy’s unique positioning as a publicly traded Bitcoin vehicle is reshaping institutional exposure to crypto assets.
Strategy shares opened the day with a slight decline tracking Bitcoin’s recent volatility.
