In an effort to bolster digital freedom globally, the US State Department is rolling out a new initiative called the Freedom Tech Excellence Program. The program brings together key players such as the Bitcoin Policy Institute, Palantir Technologies, Anduril Industries, and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation to tackle challenges like online censorship, surveillance, encryption, and AI governance.
Bitcoin’s role here is more than symbolic. By partnering with the Bitcoin Policy Institute, the State Department signals its trust in blockchain as a tool to bypass authoritarian controls and protect financial privacy. This aligns with the Institute’s longtime push for blockchain technology to combat censorship and invasive digital surveillance.
The program highlights five main focus areas: defending free expression rights in the digital space, fighting illegal surveillance and scams, promoting privacy tools like strong encryption and VPNs, overseeing responsible AI development, and protecting vulnerable users online, including children.
Private sector experts will temporarily join the State Department, working closely to shape policies on these digital issues. This approach shows a blend of diplomacy and tech expertise aimed at keeping digital spaces open and secure.
This move follows a pro-crypto shift under President Trump, who had promised support for the industry during his campaign. in March 2025, Trump signed an executive order to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a Digital Asset Stockpile, funded with about 200,000 Bitcoins seized through legal actions. The government started treating Bitcoin like a strategic asset, akin to reserves of gold or petroleum.
The new program is an example of how cryptocurrencies, once seen mostly as speculative investments, are now entering broader strategic and policy arenas. By integrating blockchain and digital rights advocacy, the US aims to set a precedent for protecting digital freedoms worldwide.
