Energy Secretary Chris Wright revealed that 278 projects were selected in the initial funding round, showcasing a diverse array of AI applications designed to speed up drug discovery, accelerate patient treatment timelines, and strengthen defenses against biological threats. As the US doubles down on AI in healthcare, it’s also tightening security protocols. Starting from October 1, the National Science Foundation will bar its funded researchers from collaborating with entities deemed security risks, including certain Chinese universities. This reflects growing concerns about protecting sensitive biomedical research from potential adversaries, aligning with the broader biosecurity strategy.
