President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his administration is initiating a Section 301 investigation into the European Union’s recent fine against Google. The EU slapped a €890 million penalty on the tech giant for allegedly breaching its Digital Markets Act by favoring its own services in search results and limiting alternatives on Google Play.
Trade tensions escalate over tech regulations
Trump described the EU's enforcement as unfair to American companies and taxpayers, signaling potential retaliatory tariffs or trade restrictions if discrimination is confirmed. “The European Union will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct,” he wrote on his social media platform.
This investigation comes just a day after Trump imposed new tariffs on various trading partners related to concerns over forced labor in supply chains. Previous EU fines targeted major US firms like Apple and Meta, which Trump also criticized.
