On July 30, the Major Cities Chiefs Association announced its endorsement of the Clarity Act, injecting fresh momentum into the stalled cryptocurrency legislation.
The association, representing police chiefs from America’s largest cities, praised recent revisions to the bill that enhance law enforcement’s tools against financial crimes involving digital assets. Their official letter highlighted new provisions aimed at improving investigations into crypto-related fraud and illicit activity.
This endorsement arrives as Congress races to finalize the bill before the August recess. Although the Clarity Act has enjoyed bipartisan backing since its House passage last year, it has faced roadblocks this year due to concerns from both lawmakers and financial institutions, notably around stablecoin yield regulations and ethics reforms.
Last week, the National Fraternal Order of Police also voiced support, while Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto proposed amendments alongside law enforcement groups indicating cautious optimism. Despite this, some Democrats remain critical, deeming the current draft insufficient.
The Clarity Act’s latest iteration attempts to address these disputes, introducing clauses to ban certain government actions and strengthen regulatory clarity. Momentum from prominent law enforcement groups could sway hesitant legislators as the deadline approaches.
