Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, flips the script on fears about AI capital expenditure. Instead of seeing worries about a potential slowdown in AI investments as a red flag, he views them as a bullish signal for the market.

Recently, Steve Eisman, the investor famous for betting against the 2008 housing bubble, sounded alarms over hyperscalers possibly cutting back their AI spending, which he believes could trigger a sharp market drop. "I think the market will go straight down," Eisman said bluntly, attributing much of the risk to Nvidia’s exposure to those hyperscalers.

Contrarian Take on Market Timing

Lee argues that widespread doubt about the durability of the AI investment cycle actually suggests the market isn't near a peak. He points out that investors typically don’t question a boom’s sustainability until it’s well underway, so the current skepticism could mean there’s more room to run.

He said, "The fact that many people are saying that is a sign that we’re not at a top because people are questioning the longevity of the cycle … I think that’s actually a bullish thing." This perspective challenges Eisman’s warning and highlights a key divide over how the AI capex debate affects stock valuations.

Lee also put this moment in context by comparing it to the late 1990s when investors frequently doubted the staying power of internet stocks like Cisco. Those doubts turned out to precede further gains rather than crashes.

As the Federal Reserve kicks off its two-day July meeting, traders are pricing in roughly a one-in-three chance of a rate increase, up from 16% just a week ago. Lee expects the Fed to rely more on quantitative tightening, shrinking its balance sheet to cool growth without triggering a recession.

The Fed's decision, along with upcoming earnings from hyperscalers engaged in the AI spending arms race, will test Lee's optimism. Meanwhile, some investors remain cautious about Nvidia’s role in this dynamic and its impact on the broader market.

Digital-asset treasury firms are already feeling the effects of their AI bets, illustrating the high stakes of this evolving sector.
