On July 28, 2026, Tether signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), aiming to bring tokenization and blockchain settlement to Kenya’s financial markets. The NSE, a key trading hub with a $26.4 billion market capitalization, is positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s digital asset transformation.
Since its founding in 1954, the NSE has gradually embraced innovation, exploring digital asset exchange-traded products starting in August 2024 and joining the Hedera Governing Council by October that year. A dedicated Innovation Lab launched in November 2025 had already prepared the ground for this major step ahead.
Transforming Market Access and Settlement
Tether’s Hadron platform will enable fractional ownership of securities, expanding opportunities for both Kenyan investors and the vast diaspora. The deal includes designing AML and KYC processes compliant with local regulations. plus Tether's stablecoin USD₮ is being considered as a potential settlement layer to improve liquidity where the law permits.
The NSE primarily facilitates trading in equities, debt securities, and derivatives, and its move toward blockchain infrastructure reflects a broader global push to modernize capital markets. This partnership exemplifies one of the most significant moves yet in African financial infrastructure, bringing instant settlement capabilities and digital asset education to the forefront.
