Tesla is reportedly preparing to release the design files and software for its Model S and Model X as open source projects. This comes amid the winding down of production for both vehicles, with Tesla shifting its Fremont factory focus to making Optimus humanoid robots.
The company made a similar move in late 2023 by open-sourcing the original Roadster’s engineering and design documents, allowing enthusiasts and developers to access detailed technical materials.
Production Wrap-up and Open Source Potential
Tesla confirmed during its Q4 2025 earnings call that Model S and Model X manufacturing will stop by mid-2026, with order cutoffs already set in markets like South Korea for the end of March 2026. Production at Fremont has mostly ceased, and the factory space will be repurposed for Tesla's robotics division.
Introduced in 2012 and 2015 respectively, the Model S and Model X have been Tesla's flagship electric vehicles for over a decade.
