"This is what regulated crypto access looks like," Sygnum's pitch to traditional banks has always been. BancaStato, the cantonal bank of Ticino founded back in 1915, just put that pitch to the test. Starting this week, its retail clients can buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Solana directly inside the same web and mobile banking apps they already use for their savings accounts and investment portfolios, no separate wallet app, no new login.
The technical backbone is a three-way integration: Sygnum's business banking API plugged into BancaStato's existing Avaloq infrastructure. Clients can place market orders by specifying either how much crypto they want or how much they want to spend in US dollars. Crucially, the setup skips a standalone order management system entirely, which Sygnum says cuts both operating costs and integration complexity. BancaStato is the first bank running Avaloq's software-as-a-service environment to route crypto trades directly through Sygnum's API, making it a reference case for the roughly 25-plus banks and international financial institutions already on Sygnum's business banking platform. That number is likely to grow: traditional finance players are increasingly finding structured ways to bring crypto exposure to mainstream clients, and turnkey bank integrations like this one lower the bar considerably.
Client assets sit in Sygnum's custody infrastructure, secured through hardware and software controls, governance procedures, and external audits. Importantly, the holdings are kept off BancaStato's balance sheet. That distinction matters: if the bank ever entered bankruptcy proceedings, client crypto would not be swept into the estate. The bank can also fine-tune which trading features are active, adjusting parameters to fit its own risk management framework rather than accepting a one-size-fits-all product.
The timing fits a broader regulatory shift. On June 30, Sygnum Europe received a crypto asset service provider license in Liechtenstein under the EU's Markets in Crypto Assets framework, clearing the way for the firm to supply regulated digital asset infrastructure to banks across the EU. For BancaStato's clients in Ticino, the practical effect is simpler: four cryptocurrencies, one banking app, and a custody structure built for a regulated environment rather than bolted on as an afterthought.
