Storj Labs officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 26, aiming to reorganize its debts without shutting down operations. Despite the financial turmoil, the company’s decentralized storage network continues to serve customers worldwide across tens of thousands of storage nodes in over 100 countries.

Operations Persist Amid Financial Restructuring

The bankruptcy filing, submitted in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia, signals Storj’s intention to address outstanding liabilities while keeping its core business alive. Customer support and network services are ongoing, and the STORJ token remains functional within the ecosystem.

However, uncertainty looms for enterprise clients who may rethink relying on Storj if the restructuring drags on. The company’s policies permit customers to halt service and retrieve stored data if insolvency proceedings extend beyond 60 days. Meanwhile, node operators can exit without notice under existing supplier agreements. So far, no significant departures have been reported, but maintaining enough storage capacity and user demand is key as Storj navigates bankruptcy.

Storj’s recent push into distributed cloud computing took a hit as well. In July 2024, the company acquired Valdi, a GPU-computing startup focused on AI workloads, aiming to broaden its reach beyond storage. Now, Storj plans to divest such non-core assets and refocus on decentralized storage, signaling a strategic retreat from expansion efforts that stretched its resources.

At the heart of the restructuring is a complex issue for holders of the STORJ token. Despite the token’s active role in the network, it does not confer any equity or ownership rights in Storj Labs according to the original 2017 token-sale terms. Token holders are not recognized as shareholders or formal creditors in the bankruptcy process. Storj has proposed a potential equity distribution plan for qualifying token holders, but details remain vague. This proposal hinges on court approval and must respect creditor priority, meaning token holders cannot count on recovery until official terms are disclosed.
