KB Kookmin Bank is set to revolutionize its corporate dollar transactions by launching a cross-border payment service powered by JPMorgan’s blockchain network, Kinexys, in August 2026. This initiative will cover ten countries, including the US, Singapore, and the UAE, streamlining payment settlements for importers and exporters.
A Shift from Traditional Systems to Blockchain Efficiency
Unlike the older SWIFT system, which often delays cross-border transfers for days and ties up capital across multiple correspondent banks, Kinexys offers near real-time settlement by utilizing tokenized deposits digital representations of fiat currency on a closed ledger. Operating 24/7, the network has already processed over $4 trillion since its launch, dramatically cutting settlement time and reducing risks related to counterparty disputes for corporate treasurers.
This move marks the first time a South Korean bank steps beyond pilots and fully integrates blockchain into its payment infrastructure for live trade settlements. It follows KB Kookmin’s earlier success in June 2026 with a $100 million blockchain-based digital bond that shortened settlement times from five to three business days.
Broader Blockchain Adoption in South Korea's Financial Sector
KB Kookmin Card is simultaneously advancing blockchain into consumer payments by developing a hybrid stablecoin credit card. also it joins eight other major South Korean banks like Shinhan and Woori in a government-backed sandbox aiming to explore tokenized bank deposits, scheduled for late 2026. This indicates a growing industry-wide momentum toward digital finance solutions within South Korea’s tightly regulated environment.
The deployment of Kinexys-enabled payments could mean significant cost savings and operational efficiencies for South Korean businesses engaged in international trade, highlighting how blockchain technology is moving from experimental phases into practical, high-value applications.
