The Shiba Inu (SHIB) project confirmed that its ongoing "experiment" remains active as the memecoin nears its sixth year since launch. This announcement coincides with a roughly 20% price increase over the past week, placing SHIB among the top-performing cryptocurrencies within the top 30 by market cap.

Origins and Rise

Shiba Inu first appeared on August 1, 2020, created anonymously by Ryoshi as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain. The team minted one quadrillion tokens and set up liquidity on Uniswap to kickstart the project. Half of the total supply was sent to Ethereum's co-founder Vitalik Buterin, aiming to demonstrate a substantial level of decentralization.

SHIB remained under the radar until early 2021, when it started gaining traction. Its breakout moment came in May 2021 after Buterin burned 41% of the token supply and donated a massive 50 trillion tokens. The memecoin soared during the crypto bull market later that year, briefly surpassing Dogecoin in market capitalization.

However, the rally faded, and SHIB's price has dropped about 95% from its all-time high reached in October 2021. Challenges such as its massive supply and limited real-world use have weighed on momentum. Still, the team insists the project’s experimental nature is far from complete.

Within this context, the recent 20% surge breathes fresh life into SHIB’s narrative, despite a market that has cooled significantly since the frenzy of 2021. As crypto markets remain volatile, such fluctuations highlight the unpredictable nature of meme tokens and their communities.
