A Shanghai-based, state-backed firm disrupted the semiconductor world by producing lithography machines that had long been exclusive to Dutch giant ASML. This breakthrough rattled AI-related stocks and dragged the S&P 500 down on Monday, spilling turbulence into the crypto arena.
ASML’s lithography equipment enables the ultra-fine circuit etching essential for cutting-edge chip manufacturing, a technology akin to the only printer authorized to create national currencies. China’s move to build its own machines unsettled investors by challenging US-led efforts to limit China’s chip industry advancement. This development undercut the scarcity narrative supporting AI hardware and the high valuations built on it.
AI and semiconductor stocks bore the brunt immediately, setting off a cascade into broader markets. The S&P 500 dipped as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies followed suit, reflecting growing risk aversion among traders. Bitcoin fell below $64,600, while Solana nudged up slightly over $75, and XRP slipped under $1.10, signaling uneven moves but a general trend toward caution. The Fear and Greed Index hovered around 30, marking sustained market anxiety.
Ethereum Defies the Downturn
Despite the broad market jitters, Ethereum quietly gained ground. Its price rose 2.3% over 24 hours, outpacing major tokens and marking a rare month-long stretch of outperformance against Bitcoin, as shown by a rising ETH/BTC ratio. Usually, Bitcoin acts as a crypto safe haven during turbulent times, so Ethereum gaining relative strength suggests a deeper shift in investor preference or confidence within the crypto space.
This shift may reflect growing faith in Ethereum’s evolving ecosystem or upcoming upgrades, contrasting with Bitcoin’s more established but limited utility. Ethereum’s resilience comes amid heightened AI sector disruption and semiconductor uncertainty, underscoring its distinct role in the digital economy.
AMD’s accelerating data center growth also ties into this broader semiconductor narrative, hinting at how hardware innovation impacts tech markets at large.
