Sberbank is gearing up to roll out a full cryptocurrency platform by December 1, 2026, becoming one of the few major financial institutions to build a fully regulated crypto infrastructure. Its plan integrates digital asset trading, custody, and settlement within a framework approved recently by Russian lawmakers, expected to take effect from September 1, 2026.
At the heart of Sberbank's initiative is a digital depository, a key innovation designed to register client crypto ownership and process most transactions off-chain. This means the majority of trades and transfers will be settled internally within Sberbank’s system rather than recorded directly on public blockchains. Alexander Vedyakhin, Sberbank's first deputy chairman, emphasized that this setup will enable faster transaction processing, lower fees, and ensure extensive audit trails to satisfy regulatory requirements.
The bank will also manage active wallets to facilitate client deposits, withdrawals, and currency transfers, maintaining tight control over digital asset flows. This architecture resembles custody solutions commonly used by large Western institutions, though tailored to comply with Russia’s unique legal landscape.
Russia's regulatory framework for crypto, which demands licensing compliance by July 1, 2027, also imposes rigorous liquidity standards on eligible assets. The Bank of Russia will supervise five categories of participants, marking a significant push for transparency and security in the emerging digital asset ecosystem.
In contrast, Western banks have largely refrained from developing similar full-stack infrastructures, often opting out amid regulatory uncertainty. European and UK authorities recently sanctioned crypto exchange HTX (former Huobi Global) over accusations of helping circumvent Russia-related sanctions, underscoring the fraught geopolitical context in which Sberbank is advancing its project.
Sberbank’s timeline puts it ahead of many competitors within the country, positioning it to dominate Russia's regulated crypto market once operations commence at the end of 2026.
Crypto markets showed mixed reactions following the announcement, with trading volumes in Russian digital assets edging slightly higher.
