On a recent day, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev’s X account was compromised, sparking concern among investors and users alike. The account was hacked to promote a counterfeit memecoin named Vladhood, using the ticker VLAD.
The fraudulent post falsely presented Vladhood as the “official Robinhood Chain mascot” and suggested the token would be listed on Robinhood’s app. This claim alarmed the market and led to a sharp decline in Robinhood’s stock price, which dropped 6.20%.
no similar announcements appeared on Robinhood’s official X or Robinhood Crypto accounts, raising immediate suspicion about the legitimacy of the message.
Robinhood responded swiftly, confirming the breach of Tenev’s account and removing the unauthorized post. The company stated they were collaborating with X to regain control.
Further investigation identified the VLAD token as a likely scam. Robinhood warned users and labeled related posts as potentially fraudulent. The Robinhood Chain explorer also flagged the token, which was linked to a contract deployed by an entity known as PonsLaunchFactory and had engaged in nearly 1,900 transactions soon after its release.
The hacked message included a contract address beginning with 0x92d, purporting a connection to Robinhood Chain, a blockchain project that went live on July 1. This network operates as an Ethereum Layer 2 on the Arbitrum Orbit stack and has seen significant activity, mainly fueled by memecoin trading rather than traditional tokenized stocks.
Before the incident, Tenev had posted that Robinhood Chain was not only suited for real-world assets (RWA) but also worked well for meme tokens, which may have lent some credibility to the fake promotion.
Current metrics show Robinhood Chain processing about 6 million transactions daily, with cumulative decentralized exchange volume around $9 billion. Memecoins like Cashcat are among the popular tokens trading on this platform.
This security breach occurs as Robinhood intensifies its focus on blockchain infrastructure and tokenized assets, underscoring vulnerabilities that come with rapid innovation.
