Ripple rolled out two major updates for its RLUSD stablecoin this week, aiming to boost adoption among institutional players. Despite these efforts, the latest data shows a 25% decline in monthly transfer volume, while user engagement surged sharply.
Ripple Mint, a new platform designed to automate stablecoin operations for institutions, was launched to simplify processes like minting, redemption, and transaction monitoring. By integrating UI and APIs, it replaces manual workflows, allowing firms to handle RLUSD transactions more efficiently and connect directly with their internal systems.
At the same time, Ripple invested strategically in Notabene, a compliance provider connecting RLUSD to a vast regulated payment network spanning over 2,300 institutions across 100 jurisdictions. This move aims to enhance regulatory compliance and expand RLUSD’s reach.
Contrasting Usage Trends and Network Expansion
Yet the increased user engagement hasn’t translated into higher transaction volume. Monthly RLUSD transfers fell to about $10.95 billion, down 25% from previous figures. Meanwhile, the number of holders rose by 6%, and active addresses jumped by 70%, suggesting more participants but smaller or less frequent transactions.
RLUSD now operates across more than 40 blockchain networks through Wormhole’s Native Token Transfers framework, significantly extending beyond its initial deployments on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum.
Currently, RLUSD's circulating supply stands at $1.51 billion, backed by $1.62 billion in reserves under a New York Department of Financial Services trust charter, signaling strong asset backing despite fluctuating usage.
Ripple Mint targets exchanges, fintech firms, and market makers that need scalable and automated stablecoin management. Offering shared reference IDs for transactions, it streamlines internal reconciliation and audit trails, which can reduce operational overhead. Access is limited to existing RLUSD customers, with pricing details yet to be disclosed.
The sharp drop in transaction volume amid rising user numbers raises questions about RLUSD’s role in institutional payment flows and whether Ripple’s infrastructure investments will convert into sustained usage. This dynamic highlights the challenges stablecoins face balancing network growth with actual transaction demand.
