Ripple has moved far beyond its initial role as a cross-border payments provider. Jack McDonald, Senior Vice President at Ripple, told Charlie Perkins from Grayscale Research that while payments were the company's first focus, it has since evolved into a complete platform offering a range of financial services tailored for institutions.
Founded in 2013 with the goal of speeding up and reducing costs for international transactions using blockchain technology, Ripple now delivers an extensive suite of solutions. These include digital asset custody, cross-border payments, the U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD, treasury management, and prime brokerage. Institutions can access these capabilities through a single integrated platform instead of juggling multiple vendors for custody, liquidity, settlement, and stablecoin operations.
A Full-Stack Blockchain Provider for Institutional Clients
This strategic shift positions Ripple as a one-stop infrastructure provider for banks, fintechs, payment companies, asset managers, and other enterprises venturing into digital assets. The company’s expansion aligns with the rising demand for tokenized assets, stablecoins, and blockchain-based settlement in traditional finance.
Ripple’s ecosystem approach aims to simplify adoption by consolidating various services under one roof, enabling smoother integration with the emerging digital asset economy. The product lineup continues to grow; Ripple recently launched Ripple Mint, an enterprise platform designed to facilitate RLUSD issuance and management across multiple blockchains, enhancing compliance, liquidity, and operational efficiency.
Alongside its commercial offerings, Ripple invests in innovation through its University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI), collaborating with over 60 academic partners globally to advance research in areas like artificial intelligence, tokenization, post-quantum cryptography, and next-gen blockchain tech.
McDonald’s insights shows Ripple’s systematic transformation over the past decade from a payments startup to a full-service institutional financial infrastructure provider that integrates payments, custody, stablecoins, treasury management, and trading solutions.
