Back in 2019, Poolin controlled roughly 20% of the global Bitcoin mining power, making it one of the biggest players on the map. Today, the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a dramatic fall fueled by regulatory shocks and operational struggles that began with China's 2021 crypto mining ban.
Poolin's story is a stark example of how government crackdowns can ripple through the crypto ecosystem. When Beijing banned crypto mining within its borders, Poolin faced the monumental task of moving its massive mining operations out of China. The sudden need to relocate caused chaos and a sharp decline in its mining output, eventually pushing Poolin’s share of the global hashrate to nearly zero.
The company sought a lifeline by shifting its base to West Texas, attempting to rebuild with new infrastructure. However, this rushed move created severe liquidity issues. By late 2022, Poolin's co-founder Kevin Pan admitted in a WeChat post that the company was grappling with serious financial trouble.
To avoid a total collapse, Poolin froze wallet services and issued IOUs to about 11,700 customers, debts that now reportedly add up to $163.7 million. These IOUs remain largely unredeemed, leaving many users in limbo.
On July 22, 2026, Poolin officially sought protection under Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for New Jersey, including its US subsidiaries Lonestar Dream Inc. and Lonestar Taproot LLC. The filings reveal liabilities around $173 million against assets estimated between $1 million and $10 million, illustrating a huge shortfall for creditors and users holding the IOUs.
The company hopes to recoup some funds by selling its Texas mining equipment and property, with a $52 million stalking-horse bid from Thor CALAP LLC setting the floor price. How much creditors and wallet holders will recover remains uncertain as the court and debtors work through the restructuring.
This bankruptcy highlights the lasting impact of regulatory measures like the China 2021 mining ban, which forced one of the largest mining pools into a painful transition and financial crisis. Poolin’s fall is a reminder that geopolitical shifts can rewrite the fate of crypto giants almost overnight.
