“Perpetual futures have become the heartbeat of crypto price discovery,” Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, remarked as he pointed to how these contracts led Bitcoin’s rallies earlier this year. Unlike traditional futures that settle on set dates, perpetual futures, or perps, never expire and dominate crypto derivatives with nearly 93% of volume. Traders pay a daily funding rate to hold these contracts indefinitely, making them the main playground for speculation and price formation.
While most imagine crypto prices forming from simple spot trading where buyers and sellers agree on each trade, the reality is different. Academic research, such as the study published in the Journal of Financial Markets by Carol Alexander and colleagues, has repeatedly found that unregulated perpetual swaps strongly dictate Bitcoin’s price moves. Even regulated futures and key U.S.-based spot exchanges often react after these derivatives shift. Binance’s perpetual market, in particular, stands out as a central hub for price discovery within a fragmented ecosystem.
The influence of perps extends beyond crypto tokens. When applied to SpaceX’s private shares during their historic IPO, these same mechanics projected valuations more precisely than Wall Street banks. However, once the stock started trading publicly, it diverged sharply from perp-driven expectations, illustrating both the power and limits of this new market force. Such developments come as volatility in crypto spot markets lures investors toward derivative products, evident in shifts like those described in recent Bitcoin ETF outflows and increased perpetual contract activity.
Still, academic debate continues. Some research points out that spot markets briefly lead price moves during certain stress events or specific timeframes. But the trend is clear: perps are no longer just a niche trading tool but central to how Bitcoin, Ether, and even unconventional assets get priced. This shift reshapes liquidity, influences market strategy, and challenges traditional views of how prices form in emerging digital markets.
