Opendoor Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: OPEN) shares lingered around $3.85 as investors braced for the company’s second-quarter earnings report due August 4. Trading remained muted with 34.6 million shares changing hands, noticeably below the average volume, signaling cautious optimism as market participants await clarity on profitability improvements.
Revenue Growth Expected, But Margins Under the Microscope
Wall Street anticipates Opendoor’s Q2 revenue to land near $900 million, a 25% rise from the $720 million posted in Q1, aligning with company guidance and analyst forecasts. However, the spotlight isn’t on top-line growth. Attention is firmly fixed on Opendoor’s efforts to improve contribution margins and adjusted EBITDA, key markers of operating efficiency.
Last quarter, Opendoor recorded a modest 4.4% contribution margin and a negative adjusted EBITDA of $31 million. Company executives now aim to push the contribution margin to about 6% and bring adjusted EBITDA close to break-even. Achieving this would mean a contribution profit jump from roughly $32 million to $54 million, a sign of progress amid ongoing challenges.
Housing Market Headwinds Weigh on Recovery
Opendoor’s path to profitability isn’t without obstacles. The housing market remains pressured by surging mortgage rates, with the average 30-year U.S. mortgage rate hitting 6.58%, the highest in nearly a year. Adding to the strain, pending home sales dipped 5.4% in June, reflecting affordability struggles that could slow Opendoor’s turnaround. These external factors complicate the company’s ability to convert increasing sales into sustainable profits.
