Nvidia is reportedly moving toward providing a $250 billion financing guarantee to back OpenAI’s lease of a colossal AI campus in southern Ohio. The project, developed by SoftBank’s energy division, is slated to become one of the largest AI data centers globally, with a staggering 10-gigawatt capacity.

A $500 Billion AI Campus Project

The Ohio campus is expected to cost over $500 billion in total, encompassing infrastructure and chip expenses. Nvidia’s financing support primarily aims to cover OpenAI’s leasing and borrowing costs for the site, rather than the direct purchase of AI chips. However, separate discussions suggest Nvidia may also assist OpenAI with up to $350 billion worth of AI chip acquisitions.

This ambitious initiative fits into Nvidia’s broader strategy to build computing infrastructure independent of major cloud providers like Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle. The first phase of the Ohio project is projected to generate approximately 800 megawatts by 2028, eventually scaling to the full 10-gigawatt capacity.
