The London Stock Exchange (LSE) plans to launch a separate overnight trading platform in the first half of 2027, extending market access beyond regular hours to meet growing investor demand and compete with crypto exchanges operating 24/7.
According to LSE officials, the new venue will operate independently from the main exchange, running from 5 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. daily, with a brief pause between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. for end-of-day processing. Regular trading hours on the main market will remain unchanged, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Focus on Exchange-Traded Products and Retail Investors
The overnight platform will initially support exchange-traded products (ETPs) rather than individual shares. This approach aims to mitigate timing and regulatory complexities associated with single stock trading outside standard hours. The LSE expects to cover over 2,600 ETPs listed in London eventually, including funds tied to UK and US stock markets, expanding retail investors' access across multiple time zones.
LSE executives emphasize that the move responds to increased retail investor activity and expectations shaped by crypto exchanges such as Binance and OKX, which offer continuous trading opportunities. Institutional firms are also expected to benefit from extended trading windows, allowing them to interact with retail order flows beyond existing market hours.
The exchange plans to integrate agentic AI tools on the new platform to assist with portfolio review, market analysis, and trade execution, reflecting broader industry trends toward automation and attracting younger, more active investors.
Crypto venues have influenced the shift toward 24-hour trading by expanding into tokenized assets and equity-linked contracts. Major US exchanges including Nasdaq, NYSE, CME, and Cboe are also extending their trading hours. For example, CME expanded crypto futures and options to a 24/7 schedule in May.
