Lightning Labs describes L402 as a way for digital services to charge automatically, without human intervention. It works by using HTTP's 402 Payment Required status code in a clever way. When an AI agent tries to access a paid service, the server responds with a 402 code plus a Lightning invoice embedded in the authentication header.
The AI pays the invoice on the Lightning Network, then presents proof of payment to the server, which verifies the transaction instantly without maintaining a complicated payment database. This stateless verification streamlines the whole process.
This move comes amid growing interest in payments designed for autonomous software rather than people. Companies like Coinbase are also developing similar protocols on Ethereum with their x402, now backed by major players including Google and Visa. Visa itself has rolled out a command-line tool for AI agent payments. Lightning Labs focuses on Bitcoin's Lightning Network, which offers fast, low-cost transactions perfect for machine commerce.
