On a hectic day, a malfunctioning trading bot triggered a flood of orders on Lighter's HYPE and ZEC markets, putting the exchange’s infrastructure under pressure.

Within five minutes, the bot made $27 million worth of HYPE trades, nearly 75% of the total volume. The sudden surge pushed Hyperliquid's price from $56.31 to $60.96, unlike other exchanges where it held steady around $58.

The same bot then drove $220.8 million in Zcash trades, representing 86.7% of activity and sending ZEC’s price from $478 to $521. Other assets on Lighter held their ground, unaffected by the chaos.

Such intense order clustering sparked short-lived price distortions that didn’t mirror genuine demand. Both tokens snapped back to normal levels quickly, reflecting healthy external price discovery.

Lighter's risk engine was tested hard but successfully contained the disruption instead of letting it ripple through markets. It used a risk-resistant fair price for margins rather than last traded prices, avoiding forced liquidations during wild swings.

This approach protected healthy accounts from being wiped out over temporary spikes and kept the incident isolated from causing broader turmoil.

Despite the bot racking up $482,000 in losses, liquidity providers and savvy limit-order traders picked up the gains. The Lighter Liquidity Pool pocketed about $143,000, while leading independent traders earned tens of thousands. Over 40 unrelated accounts made more than $1,000 filling resting orders.

These results show how orderly market design can channel losses toward prepared participants instead of spreading systemic damage. Traders quickly adapted too, increasing chase limit orders amid the volatility.

The episode confirms that solid risk controls can prevent a faulty bot from bringing down an entire exchange or triggering costly liquidations.
