Lido has unveiled its Core 2026 upgrade, a major step that will merge about 265,000 Ethereum validators into a more streamlined structure. This consolidation is set to reduce the load on Ethereum’s beacon chain by 29%, a significant trimming of the network’s validator footprint. The upgrade also introduces a system where node operators post ETH-backed collateral, creating tighter bonds within the network and potentially enhancing security.
Validators play a critical role in maintaining Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus, and such a large-scale consolidation could improve efficiency by lowering overhead and reducing network congestion. By cutting nearly a third of the validators currently active on the beacon chain, Lido aims to optimize performance without compromising decentralization.
This move comes as Ethereum continues to evolve post-Merge, adapting to the demands of scaling and security. The change reflects broader trends in crypto infrastructure, where consolidation can help balance the trade-offs between decentralization and operational efficiency.
Following news of the upgrade, market activity showed little immediate reaction, with ether prices remaining stable in early trading.
