Kentucky Industrial Alliance is suing Cave City over a 12-month moratorium imposed right after the company submitted plans for a $4.8 billion AI data center. The project, called Cave Point Commerce Center, aims to build a hyperscale facility covering 600 acres with up to 1.2 gigawatts of power capacity.
The moratorium blocks data center development, sparking two lawsuits that question both the freeze and the city's annexation of the land. The developer has already invested over $2 million and expects the center to bring roughly $45.2 million in tax revenue, including about $2.9 million annually for Cave City, along with 360 jobs.
Locals worry about environmental risks since the site lies 5 to 10 miles from Mammoth Cave National Park, the world’s longest cave system. The karst terrain there is vulnerable to water contamination and disruption, raising concerns about the impact on fragile groundwater and the electric grid. Some residents want the moratorium expanded to cover the entire county, fearing that a city-only freeze won’t address broader environmental threats.
