Bitchat, the decentralized messaging app created by Jack Dorsey, has resisted a takedown request from Indian cybercrime officials after student protesters used it to bypass network restrictions. The app’s design working without internet, phone numbers, or central servers made it difficult for authorities to monitor or block communications during tense demonstrations.

Bitchat operates by connecting devices through Bluetooth mesh networks, allowing messages to hop between phones without relying on traditional internet infrastructure. When online, it switches to Nostr relays, a protocol enabling broader decentralized communication. Users can send encrypted messages anonymously and join local or location-based channels.

Government Response Highlights App’s Effectiveness

India’s formal request to GitHub to remove the app reflected frustration with its untraceable nature. According to the government, Bitchat "significantly impedes interception, attribution, and investigation by law enforcement agencies." Calle, a lead developer on the Android version, framed this as a compliment, tweeting that the government’s actions confirmed the app’s success in enabling anonymous communication without registration or centralized logging.
