Google is backing a massive $15 billion construction loan to build a sprawling AI data center campus in Hubbard, Texas, designed for Anthropic. The site covers around 2,800 acres, and the first phase alone will cost over $5 billion. This isn’t just a real estate deal it’s part of the evolving arms race in AI infrastructure. Banks are actively vying to finance the project, set to kick off by mid-2026.
Google’s role is key. It’s providing guarantees on the loan, assuring lenders that the tech giant will cover losses if the project falters. The campus aims for an initial capacity around 500 megawatts of power, with plans to expand further. Google’s total data center investments in Texas could reach nearly $40 billion, underscoring how critical this region is for its AI ambitions. This move strengthens Google’s partnership with Anthropic, ensuring they have the compute power to compete with heavyweights like OpenAI and Meta.
Anthropic itself committed $50 billion last year to boost US AI infrastructure nationwide, including sites in New York and Texas, working alongside Fluidstack. But here’s where it intersects with crypto: a 500-megawatt data center demands a staggering amount of electricity. Texas has long been a hot spot for Bitcoin mining due to its deregulated energy market and affordable power. As AI centers draw more energy, miners could face rising costs or tighter access to electricity.
