Germany's deadline for submitting 2025 income tax returns hits at midnight tonight, and crypto investors have fresh complexities to sort out. The usual COVID-era leniency is over, so anyone who must file by law needs to have their documents delivered electronically by 24:00 on July 31, 2026. For crypto holders, this tax return introduces rules that didn’t apply in prior years.
The official cutoff is tied to when the tax office receives your return, so even if you started filing early, it’s the final submission time that counts. Those filing through a tax consultant or a wage tax assistance group enjoy an extended deadline until March 1, 2027, since the usual February 28 date falls on a weekend. If you’re filing voluntarily hoping for a refund, you can wait until December 31, 2029, without penalties.
Crypto Reporting Rules in Germany for 2025
Unlike stocks, crypto assets fall under a different tax category known as "other assets". If you hold your coins for more than a year, any profits from sales are completely tax-free, regardless of gain size. This benefits long-term holders significantly. However, if you sell within 12 months, gains are taxed at your personal income rate, potentially up to 45%. A €1,000 tax exemption applies to all private sales combined annually. Surpassing this limit means your entire gain is taxable, not just the excess.
Additional income like staking, lending, or mining rewards counts separately and is taxable when received, with its own €256 exemption. Trading one crypto for another, including on decentralized exchanges like Uniswap or Curve, counts as a taxable event. Germany’s finance ministry confirmed in 2025 that such DEX trades are treated like transactions on centralized platforms such as Binance or Kraken. When calculating gains, tax authorities apply the FIFO method on a per-wallet or per-exchange basis.
Investors still have hours to submit their returns using the official ELSTER platform or tax software. Delay means penalties, as extensions no longer exist for most taxpayers.
Markets showed mild calm as the deadline approached, with no significant volatility linked to filing activity.
