The locations for these centers will be chosen based on their energy capacity, network connectivity, and how smoothly supply chains can be managed, key factors for such power-hungry operations.

Energy demands pose a notable challenge. A single gigafactory is expected to consume as much electricity as a small city, putting them in direct competition with sectors like Bitcoin mining for grid resources. This tension over energy could have wider implications for both the crypto world and AI deployments. Meanwhile, the EU's push could accelerate the growing overlap between AI and blockchain ecosystems, as decentralized technologies increasingly rely on AI-driven computation.

Applications are pouring in: 77 bids have been received from 16 member states, with formal calls for projects scheduled for summer 2026 by the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking. This marks a significant step in shifting Europe’s AI infrastructure from dependence to self-sufficiency, potentially reshaping chip manufacturing and digital infrastructure in the process.
