Coinbase Business customers now have a new way to accept payments via AI agents, with transactions handled through the x402 protocol using USDC. This new capability requires no additional setup for eligible merchants and represents a significant step in Coinbase's push into AI-driven commerce.
Streamlining Transactions Between AI Agents and Merchants
The x402 protocol, developed by Coinbase, enables AI agents to complete purchases in USDC directly from businesses using Coinbase Payments. According to Sid Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, the goal is to replicate the convenience of traditional shopping in an online environment where AI agents handle the interactions. These agents can create wallets using Coinbase's developer tools and then smoothly check out products offered by merchants optimized for AI-driven purchases.
Enhanced Trading Support Through Natural Language AI
Beyond payments, Coinbase has expanded AI integration to its exchange platform, introducing a live feed that displays AI agent trades including order status, price, and size in real time. Users can now instruct AI agents using straightforward English commands, such as buying Ethereum after a price dip or selling when specific conditions are met. The system leverages WebSocket market data, the same as institutional traders, to execute trades automatically as market conditions evolve.
Developer Tools to Accelerate AI Payment Adoption
To promote widespread use, Coinbase has launched an x402 software development kit allowing developers to add AI payment functionality to APIs and web services with just three lines of code. This ease of integration aims to reduce development time and encourage more businesses and platforms to incorporate AI agent payments. The focus on AI payments aligns with Coinbase's broader vision to harness the agentic economy’s growth, signaling a major shift in how online transactions might evolve.
