Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, dismissed the growing trend urging crypto entrepreneurs to switch focus to AI, labeling it “zero sum, scarcity thinking.” In a recent statement, Armstrong argued that crypto should not be seen as competing with AI but rather as foundational infrastructure, comparable to electricity or the internet.

Armstrong emphasized that AI’s rise won’t diminish crypto’s role; rather, it elevates it. He introduced the concept of "Agentic Finance (AiFi)," where AI-driven agents will require real-time programmable money to operate effectively. These agents can’t open traditional bank accounts or endure slow transactions, so crypto presents the ideal financial backbone for autonomous payments.

Crypto Miners Shift Toward AI Computing

The crossover between crypto and AI is already visible in the mining sector. Companies like Core Scientific, CleanSpark, and DMG Blockchain Solutions have leased mining facilities to major tech players such as Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, who demand more computing power for AI workloads.

Adam Sullivan, Core Scientific’s CEO, views the miners’ pivot to AI as a significant business opportunity. Meanwhile, Armstrong maintains that this trend doesn’t signal crypto’s decline but rather highlights the complementary nature of the two technologies.

Armstrong’s stance challenges the popular notion to abandon crypto in favor of AI, underscoring instead that crypto is critical infrastructure that will support the growing AI ecosystem.
