Chinese memory chip manufacturers ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC) are rapidly expanding their market share, offering chips at about half the price of international competitors. This shift has broad implications, especially for crypto miners who depend heavily on affordable, high-performance memory components.

Rapid Growth and Market Penetration

Five years ago, CXMT was nearly invisible in the global DRAM scene. Today, the company controls between 7.7% and 11.1% of the worldwide DRAM capacity, aiming to hit nearly 14% by 2027. Meanwhile, YMTC holds roughly 11% to 13% of the NAND flash market and is projected to reach 15% by 2028.

CXMT plans to produce over 300,000 wafers monthly, pricing its DRAM modules at around $150 each, compared to the $300 to $400 average set by international players. This aggressive pricing undercuts competitors and pressures the global market. CXMT's influence was solidified with a $7 billion deal signed in July 2026 with ByteDance, TikTok's parent company.

YMTC gained attention in 2019 with its 64-layer 3D NAND technology and has since pushed forward with new plants, expecting mass production by late 2026 or early 2027. Both firms benefit from strong government support and the vast domestic demand from Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent, which help absorb large volumes as the companies scale.

Geopolitical Shifts and Industry Reactions

In early 2026, CXMT was removed from the Pentagon’s restricted list, opening doors to more global market participation, including potential U.S. customers. YMTC still faces some U.S. restrictions but thrives on China's enormous internal demand, allowing it to avoid reliance on South Korean or U.S. supply chains.

Memory chips are essential for crypto mining rigs, AI training, and high-performance computing. CXMT's DRAM pricing at half the global average could reduce both the initial and operational costs for miners, potentially widening access to mining and improving profit margins.

Interestingly, crypto traders have started to take notice, with reports of derivative tokens and meme coins tied to CXMT emerging, signaling market speculation around these chipmakers.

Meanwhile, Samsung and SK Hynix are doubling down on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI accelerators, a premium segment where Chinese companies have yet to catch up. Micron is also heavily investing in this area.
