Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, warned on July 25, 2026, that Bitcoin risks losing its top position in the crypto market if it fails to adapt to the challenges posed by quantum computing.
In an interview on The Starting Block, Hoskinson pointed to Bitcoin’s governance model as a major obstacle to implementing significant protocol upgrades. He argued that this rigidity may prevent Bitcoin from efficiently responding to future threats, particularly those linked to quantum-resistant security.
Quantum Computing: A New Challenge for Bitcoin
Hoskinson highlighted that Bitcoin overcame several hurdles in its history, including the disappearance of its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. However, quantum computing represents a novel threat requiring coordinated, network-wide protocol changes that Bitcoin may struggle to deploy quickly.
Currently, Bitcoin holds a market capitalization of $1.28 trillion, maintaining its status as the largest cryptocurrency. Still, Hoskinson believes its inability to pivot swiftly could open the door for alternatives.
He described Cardano as a “spiritual successor” to Bitcoin, designed to address limitations that Bitcoin’s early development could not resolve due to time and technical constraints. A key advantage is Cardano’s on-chain governance system, allowing stakeholders to vote on and implement protocol changes smoothly, which could be key if quantum-resistant upgrades become necessary.
Hoskinson also announced Cardano’s upcoming major upgrade, Ouroboros Leios, expected to boost the blockchain’s performance by 60 times. Developers launched the Musashi Dojo testnet recently, demonstrating steady progress. In addition, the recent activation of the van Rossem hard fork sets the stage for these enhancements.
