BlackRock has experienced significant outflows of over $1.2 billion from its cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs) during the five trading days leading up to July 2, predominantly affecting its Bitcoin fund.
Outflows Breakdown
The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) accounted for the majority of the withdrawals, totaling approximately $1.22 billion from June 26 to July 2. Daily outflows were recorded at $444.5 million, $300.4 million, $212.4 million, $219.4 million, and $40.4 million, illustrating substantial selling pressure on Bitcoin. In contrast, BlackRock’s Ethereum ETFs, ETHA and ETHB, only saw combined outflows of $7.4 million in the same period.
Ethereum Performance
Despite some losses, ETHA attracted new investments on multiple trading days, though these gains were partially negated by withdrawals from ETHB, resulting in minimal overall change in Ethereum exposure. Ultimately, Bitcoin represented more than 99% of the combined net outflows from BlackRock’s Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, which totaled around $1.225 billion.
Market Context
These withdrawals occurred amid a larger downturn in the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market, with industry-wide data revealing that Bitcoin ETFs experienced significant redemptions across four of the five trading days. Although the market saw a modest rebound with a $223.5 million inflow on July 2, it was insufficient to counterbalance the earlier withdrawals. In a more favorable light, Ethereum ETFs began to regain investor interest, showing net inflows of $14.8 million and $29 million on July 1 and July 2, respectively, ending a streak of outflows.
Overall, the cryptocurrency ETF ecosystem remains under pressure as digital asset prices decline and investor sentiment falters. Analysts suggest that ongoing ETF redemptions, reduced institutional interest, and a pivot towards sectors like artificial intelligence have contributed to the market's current state. Despite this trend, BlackRock maintains its position as a leading player in the U.S. crypto ETF landscape, with IBIT and ETHA ranking among the largest investment options for Bitcoin and Ethereum.
